Species Composition and Distribution of Pelagic Cephalopods from the Pacific Ocean off Oregon
نویسنده
چکیده
MUCH OF OUR PRESENT KNOWLEDGE about the species composition and distribution of ceph alopods of the Pacific Ocean is derived from collections made on cruises of the "Albatross," steamer of the U.S. Fish Comm ission, dur ing the late nine teenth and early twentieth centuries. "Albatross" collections along the west coast of North America were taken mainly off California and Central America or Alaska, and comparatively few collections were made off Oregon (Townsend, 1901). Neither Berry (1 912 ) nor Hoyle (1 904) lists any cephalopods taken off Oregon. A description of a new species of squid ( Pearcy and Voss, 1963 ) and an abstract ( Pearcy, 1963 ) are the only reports of pelagic cephalopods off Oregon." Clearly, more data are needed before comparisons of fauna and generalization' on zoogeographic distribution can be made.

An East-West Comparison of the Transition Zone Coastal Pelagic Nekton of the North Pacific Ocean
During the 1980s and 1990s, scientific research cruises were conducted in both the eastern and western boundary regions of the North Pacific Ocean. The main purpose of these cruises was to examine the abundance and distribution patterns of juvenile salmon in coastal waters. These studies created one of the most extensive databases ever collected on the species composition of coastal Transition ...
متن کاملFeeding ecology and trophic relationships of pelagic sharks and billfishes coexisting in the central eastern Pacific Ocean
Large pelagic fishes are top predators inhabiting the water column of the tropical and subtropical Pacific Ocean. They are highly migratory organisms, and for Ecuadorian fisheries, they also represent important economic resources. We sampled 4 shark species, Prionace glauca, Isurus oxyrinchus, Carcharhinus falciformis and Alopias pelagicus, and 3 billfish species, Xiphias gladius, Istiophorus p...

متن کاملThe Origin and Initial Rise of Pelagic Cephalopods in the Ordovician
BACKGROUND During the Ordovician the global diversity increased dramatically at family, genus and species levels. Partially the diversification is explained by an increased nutrient, and phytoplankton availability in the open water. Cephalopods are among the top predators of today's open oceans. Their Ordovician occurrences, diversity evolution and abundance pattern potentially provides informa...
متن کاملBrodeur Et Al.: Pelagic and Demersal Fish Predators on Juvenile and Adult Forage Fishes
A requisite for reliable food web models and ecosystem-based management in regions such as the California Current is the availability of diet information on key predators. In upwelling ecosystems, much of the lower trophic level energy may be transferred through a relatively small set of very abundant pelagic forage fish taxa, such as anchovies, sardines, smelts, and herring. In addition the pe...
